Incubation Training for Child Brides

125 child brides and girls at risk take part in a 6-month business incubation training. This equips them with practical skills to identify, start and run small income generating initiatives.

  • Local solution

125 child brides and girls at-risk participate in a 6-month practical and hands-on training on how to identify, start and run small income generating initiatives (IGAs). The participants (aged 11 – 23) live in rural underserved communities in 4 divisions of the Northwest Region of Cameroon. They are uneducated and lack knowledge and vocational skills required to start income generating activities.

Their families live in unsafe regions, and parents may genuinely believe that marrying their daughters is the best way to protect them from danger. As a result, the target group is faced with the threat of early and forced marriages, sexual exploitation and abuse, gender-based violence, trafficking, and modern-day slavery.

In a previous project Sustain Cameroon imparted vocational skills to 35 child brides and girls at risk and supported them start sustainable income generating initiatives. Being, experts in this domain, they believe that this is a much-needed solution to the perennial abuse, violence and discriminating traditions against women.  This approach focuses on providing practical needs and is more realistic to addressing the issues of abuses and discrimination in the midst of women and girls.  Sustain Cameroon strongly believes that when access to alternative income sources is provided, they will build their confidence and challenge the conditions that hold them down.

After the training, participants will be paired up with existing business owners to learn before setting up their businesses. 15 most vulnerable girls will receive seed capital to start either a grocery shop, tailoring or hairdressing businesses, while 110 start their own businesses using their own resources or seek employment in existing local businesses. They will all be integrated into Self Help Groups where they receive one-on-one coaching and mentorship for 6 months. This way, they are ready to start their business.

Sustain Cameroon will also avail resources, materials and tools for the establishment of two savings and revolving microcredit schemes. This will guarantee growth and expansion since participants can save and borrow to support their businesses.

    Lives improved

125 child brides and girls at risk acquire relationship development skills and practical business skills through a series of business training sessions.

15 are supported to own thriving and sustainable business ventures with reliable income streams. The improved household income allows them to afford basic necessities and education for their children which enhances their health and their wellbeing.

Consequently, 75 vulnerable families and low-income households will benefit from the improved household income.

    Community impact

At least 50% targeted beneficiaries and households have a steady increase in their incomes as a result of the intervention. They access nutritious food and are witnessing better health conditions and wellbeing.

1 fully functional vocational training centre will be established in one of the 4 target communities. This ensures access to the materials, resources and tools for vocational skills training to more young women encouraging. This way, participants become agents of their own change transforming their own communities and lives.

We also envision 100% successful growth of 2 savings and revolving microcredit loan schemes, serving entire communities and particularly low income and poor households.

With a budget of XAF 6,147,895 (or € 9,222)Sustain Cameroon will carry out the following activities:

          Business Training and associated costs

Purchase of grocery, tailoring and hairdressing tools of trade.

2 new village savings and revolving microcredit loan schemes will be established.

5% to iMPACT direct for facilitating direct donations to local solutions (which helps to cover costs of the website, promotion and proposal writing, costs of financial services and the support to NGOs).

SUSTAIN Cameroon’s contribution is as follows:

Provide expertise for the training. The training will be run by staff and thus we will not need to source and pay for and or hire external experts.

Liaise with the community to ensure that they accord us assistance in securing space for training.

Through community mobilizers and volunteers, we will also undertake to mobilize the beneficiaries in the communities for the training.

  • I am happy and grateful that Sustain Cameroon identified and placed me amongst those who were to benefit and learn the trade. I have started to master tailoring and I am sure as the days are going, I will get better. I see my future so bright being my own boss and being able to earn something for myself and to support my own family.
